In India, Death Sentence for Rapists is more harmful for Women
Rape is no doubt a heinous crime and we need to deal with
it, but should it be tactful or just as an outrage? Recent rape cases in India
bought outrage against rapists on national level. Parliament itself witnessed
anger and frustration against rape within its halls.
Amid all these chaos, demand for death sentence for rapist
is on top list. Other demands against rapists is chemical castration etc.
legislation has its own boundaries and doesn't work under anger and outrage. Legislation is not a discussion which goes on streets or at friend’s place,
where four, five self considered scholars put on their views. Awakening should
not be seen as public protest on streets and candle stuffs.
Various religious and political heads are trying to enforce
their own opinions based upon their own ideologies; can they guarantee that if
their opinion is held it could bring an end to rapes? Does rape happen only for
one reason: sexual gratification? If no, then one solution is just useless to
deal with multi cause crime.
If Death sentence for Rapist is legalized in a country like
India, how many Rapists would leave their victims alive? How many women, girls
would be left alive after rape is done? Won’t such legislation result in
increase in crime: Murder? Rather than curbing crime chart such laws will
ironically increase murders along with rapes. Dealing with crime and dealing
with anger and frustration are two different things. We must consider
backlashes of laws before we bring them into effect.
Chemical castration as well in a country like India would
result in further assaults on raped women by rapists, once they rape they may
damage critical organs of women, quiet possible. In the end raped women would
have more grievous mental damage, because there would be permanent or grievous physical
damage to their bodies as well by rapists.
I want to convey just a simple thing that we are not dealing
with just one rapist and giving justice to one victimized woman, rather we are
into amendment of a law at national level, we must never assume or take things
for granted, also never ignore pros and cons.
Those who demand such laws, if they are genuinely interested
in their demands must take future pros and cons for considerations before they
bark their demands on streets. Most of agitators are sympathizers of opposition
parties trying to project ruling party as inefficient, so they get advantage in
next election.
I’ll write dealing with rapists in another post, hope
readers get the message that I want to give.

Times of India giving undue advantage to Deoband
M/S Times of India, next time when you have any news wherein Deoband seminary is also involved, don't project Deoband as supreme authority of Indian Muslims. Deoband seminary's opinion/ diktats should never be taken as sole official opinion about Islam or Indian Muslims. These give rise to sectarian tension, Times of India please avoid projecting Deoband as sole voice of Muslims in India, TOI paper usually suffixes Asia's largest seminary and other titles to Deoband, which is not appropriate.
Muslims in India are divided among various jurisprudential schools major among those are:
- Hanafi Sunni Bareillvi
- Hanafi Sunni Deobandi
- Shafai Sunni Bareillvi
- Shafai Sunni Deobandi
- Shia
- Ahlul Hadith
- Bohra (with various groups among them)
TOI refrain from giving undue advantage to Deoband by project it as whole and sole authority, since TOI is widely read newspaper in India, it may unknowingly spread notion that Deonband's diktats are what Islam is all about. Which may create sectarian tensions as well. Deoband has always kept itself around controversy Deoband's muftis frequently issue fatwa (verdict) which appears controversial, this they do to remain in limelight, TOI is unknowingly giving them the footage they are craving for.
